The 5 individuals who assaulted an understudy of Islamic University at his lodging and denied him of his three cell telephones were on Thursday sentenced to an aggregate jail term of 75 years by an Accra Circuit Court.
The sentence was given after the Court discovered them blameworthy of the charges of connivance to ransack and theft.
The charged persons were sentenced to 15 years each on the charge of conspiracy to rob and 15 years on the charge of theft.
The sentences are to run simultaneously.
The convicts are Anthony Galley otherwise known as Rasta, a dealer, Amewuga Kumafu otherwise known as Hugah, a worker, Richard Tenyuie, a driver's mate, Richard Korley otherwise known as Sapele, and Akwasi Aikins otherwise known as Macho, both auto circuit testers.
The Court directed by Mr Justice Francis Obiri said it contemplated the rise in theft cases while the wife of one of the convicts, who has a two month old child, sobbed wildly after the judgment was conveyed.
Arraigning Chief Inspector Kofi Adu said Mr Alhassan Mufid; the complainant is an understudy of the Islamic University at Adjiringanor while the convicts live at Brazil, a suburb of Agbogboloshie.
On April 16, at around 1230 hours, the complainant and his companions were before their understudy lodging at Adjiringanor snapping picture with their telephones when the convicts all of a sudden assaulted them with firearms and cutlasses.
Boss Inspector Adu said the convicts debilitated the complainant with a weapon or cut his body with the cutlass on the off chance that he neglected to surrender his three cell telephones.
Indictment said the complainant did hand them over and later educated his companions who began following the telephones with a gadget yet that did not yield any outcomes.
At the point when the matter was accounted for to the Police and Galley was conveyed to the Adjiringanor Police station the complainant distinguished him at this very moment the thieves who denied him of his cell telephones.
As indicated by indictment, Galley drove the police and Kumafu, Tenyuie, Korley and Aikins were captured.
Amid investigation, Chief Inspector Adu said, Kumafu told the police that on April 16, he got an Apple Iphone from Moses and Selorm who are on the loose.
He said Kumafu guaranteed he sent the iPhone to his brother by marriage known as Hamza Aziz to keep it for him for a charge of GH₵ 200. At the point when Aziz was captured the iphone was recovered.
