A Teacher asks students a question about God, then tells them what their answer should be

Jordan Wooley is a 7th grade student at West Memorial Junior High School in Katy, Texas.
After receiving an assignment that made her uncomfortable, she chose to speak before the board of the Katy Independent School District:
"I was given an assignment in school that questioned my faith and told me that God was not real.
We were asked to take a poll to say whether God is fact, opinion or a myth and she told anyone who said fact or opinion was wrong and God was only a myth.”
“Mythology”, according to dictionary.com, is a fairly nuanced term:
“…a set of stories, traditions, or beliefs associated with a particular group or the history of an event, arising naturally or deliberately fostered.”

A “myth”, then, can be based in fact or fiction but the students may not have been aware of that definition, and the teacher may not have been using it, myth, as a colloquialism, implies a fictional base.
Several students were very upset by the assignment; some of them because any student who persisted in claiming that God is real faced a reduction in grades. Jordan continued:
“Another student asked the teacher if we could put what we believe in the paper, and she said we could … but you would fail the paper if you do.
I had known before that our schools aren’t really supposed to teach us much about religion or question religion. When I asked my teacher about it she said it doesn’t have anything to do with religion because the problem is just saying there is no God.”
When Jordan was asked how the interaction made her feel, she responded:
"I felt like she was taking away my religion, what I believe is true.”
The seventh-grader had previously challenged her school when they held no memorial on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, naming the day “National Make Your Bed Day” instead.
The school board has promised to look into the situation.

The Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum and governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has said the mismanagement of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government was responsible for the sufferings experienced in the nation, assuring that the All Progressives Congress, APC government would address all the challenges facing Nigeria.

He said the APC was a masses oriented party created to touch the lives of the ordinary man in the country.

According to him, APC government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari has all it takes to fix the problems of the country.

Okorocha, who stated this yesterday while giving a brief remark at the opening ceremony of the APC governors progressive meeting at the Yankari Game Reserve in

CRUEL! Woman Hires Assassins To Kill Husband For This Shocking Reason (PHOTOS)

A Kenyan woman, Ms Rose Adhiambo and her house help, Doris Akinyi, have been arrested for allegedly hiring an assassin to murder the woman’s husband, Mr Polycarp Okumu.

The man, a Mombasa based tycoon took the wife to court because he believes that she committed the said act so that she can inherit his wealth.

According to Linda Ikeji, Dominic Kiptum, the Police Constable investigating the matter, told a Mombasa court that the suspects and their accomplices conspired to carry out their devious plan between October 20 and 26.

The man popularly referred to as Kamili, also alleged that he caught his wife red handed withdrawing Ksh 1.2 million at Kenyan Commercial Bank, Naivas Branch in Nyali, with which she wanted to settle the assassins to complete the process.
Unfortunately, luck ran out on her as she was nabbed during her conversation with the killers to strike a deal on where and when to pick up the money.

Reports say it was not the first time she had planned to execute her husband as he was said to have survived food poisoning from the same woman.

Both suspects have now been detained at the Bamburi police station, on the order of the Resident Magistrate, Viola Yator following an application to that effect.

The case was adjourned to November 9 after the suspects were remanded in prison custody.

Below are some of the properties she is allegedly eyeing and planing to inherit...

Vice president, Yemi Osinbajo yesterday said that further devaluation of Naira was not an option to solve the current economic down turn in the country.
He talked about the Federal government's plan to set up a $25billion  Infrastructural Fund which would be sourced from local and international sources including Nigeria’s Sovereign Wealth Fund.

the Ambassadors of Italy Mr. Fulvio Rustico and the Canadian High Commissioner in Nigeria Mr. Perry John Calderwood in his office at the presidential villa, Abuja.

He said:
“I don’t agree on devaluation and it is not that I am doctrinaire about it. In the first place, it is not a solution-we are not exporting significantly. And the way things are, devaluation will not help the local economy.
“What we need to do is to start spending more on the economy and then things will ease up a bit.”
The Vice President disclosed that already other sovereign wealth funds have indicated interest in the fund which would be used to address the nation’s decaying road, rail and power infrastructures.
He added:
"This is our approach to speeding up the country’s infrastructural development.”

Osinbajo also said that the current foreign exchange restriction is only a temporary measure to ensure that “we don’t deplete our foreign exchange substantially,” at a time when the prices of oil in the international market is dropping.

He added that the restriction was for the benefit of the country's economic stability.

He said:
“I am not sure devaluation is the issue, but how to ensure foreign direct investment which is more useful”, he said.
The Vice President also reassured investors who already have contracts and loan commitments that the federal government would work with the Central Bank of Nigeria to protect legitimate businesses from being affected by the current foreign exchange restrictions.

Genevieve Nnaji has opened up on why she decided to produce her own movie ‘Road to Yesterday’, following her long hiatus .She also revealed though she hasn't ruled out marriage, she is waiting for the right man.. Excerpts from her interview with Chux Ohai of Punch
On why it has taken her a long time to join the growing ranks of new generation movie producers in the country, Genevieve says,

“I chose to be an actress. Acting was what I had always wanted to do. I don’t think that I ever imagined myself producing a film. I love acting. If the Nigerian movie industry was as stable as it should be, I probably would have been on the set of a movie every day of my life and not be bothered about what goes on behind the camera. So it is a matter of choice and preference.”On marriage ..

Genevieve to choose a life partner and finally walk down the aisle, marriage does not seem to be in her agenda yet. Asked when she would finally take the plunge, the actress replies that contrary to speculations, she has not ruled out marriage. PHOTO: 1,000-year-old Bible recovered in central Turkey

Police confiscated a Bible estimated to be 1,000 years old in the central Turkish city of Tokat on Tuesday.

Police detained three suspects who were attempting to sell the Bible, written in the old Assyriac language, to undercover police officers.

Many other historical artifacts were also seized by the security forces.

It is not known where the Bible originated from. Police said the book had only 51 pages left and its cover was widely damaged though pictures made of gold leafs with religious motifs inside the Bible were intact.

Tokat is the city where "Orphan Man, Standing," an authentic oil painting by Vincent Van Gogh was found last year in the boot of a vehicle owned by a suspected artifact smuggler.

United Nations votes 191-2 to condemn U.S. embargo against Cuba

In the first United Nations vote on a resolution condemning the U.S. embargo against Cuba since the two countries renewed diplomatic ties in July, Cuba scored its biggest victory yet as the General Assembly voted 191-2 to adopt the resolution.

The only drama was how the United States would vote after its Dec. 17 announcement of a rapprochement with Cuba and its renewal of diplomatic relations with Havana in July after a gap of more than 54 years.

In explaining its “no” vote, the United States said that it couldn’t support the resolution because “the text falls short of reflecting the significant steps that have been taken and the spirit of engagement President [Barack] Obama has championed.” The other no vote came from Israel, which has consistently voted with its ally on this issue.

“If Cuba thinks this exercise will help move things forward in the direction both governments have indicated they wish, it is mistaken,” Ambassador Ronald D. Godard, U.S. senior area adviser for Western Hemisphere Affairs, said at the General Assembly.

Despite demonstrated progress in the relationship, Godard said, the United States “finds it unfortunate” the Cuban government has chosen to introduce a resolution “nearly identical” to those of years past.

The United States had to balance its developing relationship with Cuba and the president’s position that he wants to work with Congress to get the embargo lifted against an awkward and unprecedented stance of not standing in opposition to a resolution contrary to U.S. law.

Police Arrest 5 suspected assassins in Imo

Imo State police command yesterday nabbed five armed men suspected to be hired assassins in Aladinma Layout of Owerri municipality.

Similarly, the command has successfully rescued the three medical doctors, who were kidnapped by hoodlums, while on their way to Isu Local Government Area of the state for a free medical treatment.

The current success stories may be connected with the riot act read by the Commissioner of Police, CP, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, that his command was fully poised to make the state very uncomfortable for criminals.

Vanguard investigations revealed that luck ran out on the armed hoodlums when a crack team of eagle-eyed policemen swung into action soon after getting a credible tip-off and foiled their plan.

It was also gathered that the armed gangsters were on the verge of taking off for their operation when the police men arrived and rounded them up.

A reliable source within the command told Vanguard that the target of the hoodlums was a high profile personality living in the area.

Although the source resisted all attempts to name the personality, he, however, revealed that the two ideas on the hoodlums’ table were to either kidnap or outrightly eliminate the fellow.

Continuing, the source further revealed that assorted dangerous weapons, including guns, were recovered from the armed gang.

“The police recovered varying dangerous weapons, including firearms, from the hoodlums. They have been taken away for serious questioning,” the source concluded.

All efforts made to reach the mobile line of the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, a deputy superintendent of police, DSP, at press time failed, as the network provider announced that his line could not be reached.

Oshodi-Apapa gridlock: Senate seeks immediate reactivation of port rail lines

It asked Lagos State government to collaborate with Federal Government agencies to end the present gridlock.

It also, yesterday, asked the Federal Government to consider long-term plans and expansion of the Apapa-Ijora-Iganmu-Orile-Mile 2 access trunks as well as the Apapa Tin Can-Mile 2 -Oshodi corridor, adding that government should move in and address the problem in the interest of the economy.

These resolutions were sequel to a motion by Senator Oluremi Tinubu (APC, Lagos Central), entitled The Apapa Port Gridlock, and Co-sponsored by 106 senators.

The Senate also resolved that when constituted, the Senate Committee on Marine Transport should summon the leadership of Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA; Nigerian Shippers Council; Ministry of Works and Transport; Western Naval Command; National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW; Association of Maritime Truck Owners, AMATO, and police to dialogue on how to tackle the menace of traffick gridlock.

Earlier, Senator Tinubu, while moving the motion, said: “75 percent of Nigeria’s trade is ship-borne and shipped through the Apapa ports, where cargo and petroleum products bearing trucks regularly cause gridlock on Apapa-Mile 2 and Apapa-Oshodi corridors.”

I Gained Nothing From Jonathan - Edwin Clark

Chief Edwin Clark, an elder statesman, said that he did not gain anything from being close to the former president Jonathan.

In a lengthy letter, Clark, who was said to have assumed the position of the father of the president, penned down a note about alleged misconceptions about him and the former president.

According to Vanguard, the former minister poured out his mind in the 3,902-word letter, saying he had known Jonathan before he became the president. He said he didn’t at any time gain anything from being close to the former president. He went further to explain how close associates and party leaders around the former president sold out. Read the letter below:

“My statements on President Jonathan and my quitting partisan politics were wickedly, sensationally presented. It must be admitted that President Jonathan was very willing to fight corruption, but he believed that due process should and must be followed otherwise he could have initiated investigations into the scandals of Halliburton, Siemens and other serious alleged corruption charges levelled against some former Heads of State and other prominent Nigerians.

‘He was sabotaged’

“Jonathan believed that there are institutions set up by the government, such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions, EFCC, and other anti-graft agencies. Regrettably, some of those who surrounded him led by the Attorney General, Alhaji Hassan Tukur, made it impossible for these institutions to work either by stopping them from arresting offenders or prosecuting some of the cases. Over 50 high profile corruption cases are still pending in the various courts for over eight years now. Laughable plea bargains and out of court settlements became the order of the day.

“It was at this juncture, when there was general complaint about the government not aggressively fighting corruption, that I addressed an open petition to the then Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Dahiru Musdapher, November 2 , 2011, complaining that most of those charged to court, especially former governors who have become senators, were still pending.

READ ALSO: FG Denies Owing Ex Niger Delta Militants

“He promptly replied my letter on November 3. Most of the petitions written against some prominent Nigerians, addressed to the anti-graft agencies, did not see the light of the day. Ironically, the perpetrators of these corrupt actions were the same persons who attacked Jonathan’s inability to eradicate corruption.

“It is indeed most disingenuous to insinuate that my relationship with the former President was based on what benefits accrued to me. That is far from the truth as I never benefited any material thing from President Jonathan in all his six years as President.

‘I didn’t get anything from Jonathan’

“With all modesty, I am at this age contented. I state publicly therefore, that I never sought nor obtained any contract, oil block, oil lifting allocation or financial gratification from the ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs, during his years of administration. Similarly, I never solicited for appointments or special placements for any of my children or relations in any government or private concern on account of my relationship with President Jonathan.

“It is, therefore, ludicrous and totally ill-motived for these wicked and mischievous persons to sell to the public that my decision portends a plan to seek any special favours from President Muhammadu Buhari and his government, or to protect those gains which I acquired from Jonathan’s government, which never existed.

“On the contrary, my public service in this country, which spans over 60 years, had given me the opportunity to seek the political, social and economic development of my people and Nigeria in general. I remain committed more than ever before to the economic, political and social emancipation of the people of the Niger Delta, South-South, the entire minorities and the development and unity of this great nation.

“My support for Goodluck Jonathan predates his presidency. It dates back to the period when he was the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State. So, for people, who are thinking that I only knew Dr. Jonathan when he became the President or that I was one of his hangers on, I think there will be need to give them a little information.

‘I knew him before he became President’

“My relevance and leadership of my people as an elder statesman and a critical stakeholder in this Nigeria project far pre-dates Dr. Jonathan’s public life and presidency. I have been relevant in politics and I have served my people honestly and creditably well.

“I became very close to Dr. Goodluck Jonathan when he was Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State. I was present in London when the late former Governor of Bayelsa State, the Governor General of the Ijaw Nation, Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha, was arrested at the prompting of the Nigerian government under Olusegun Obasanjo because of his hatred for Alamieyeseigha.

“I had to cancel my flight to Nigeria at the London airport when news of the arrest of Alamieyeseigha was conveyed to me by Ambassador Pereware from Paris. I went with a few well meaning Nigerians to Essex where we had been informed that he was kept, but could not find him. We went to a few other places before we were able to locate where he was.

“I remained in London for one week with him to put in place machineries for his bail. I recall the large heartedness of Lady Ann Iyoha, who brought out the title deed of her property in London to secure his bail and also the magnanimity of another woman from Amasoma, the home town of Chief Alamieyeseigha in Bayelsa State.

‘We’re proud of him’

“I still believe that Jonathan performed creditably well in various areas. I am very proud of him and so are millions of other Nigerians. He did many good things for this nation. Ordinarily, at my age and position in life, I should not have to justify myself in a press controversy on my voluntary decision to quit partisan politics, particularly when this personal and well intended act has come under unfair politicization of persons of mediocre temperament.”

Recall that former presidential aide, Reuben Abati, recounted how Edwin Clark was all over the former president, lambasting him for saying Jonathan is incapable of fighting of corruption, after glorifying himself with the  ‘Jonathan is my son’ song.

Meanwhile, some ex-militants under the aegis of the Niger Delta Liberation Force (NDLF) had recently asked Chief Edwin Clark, the former federal commissioner for information to shut up following his comments against Goodluck Jonathan.

We Will Not Tolerate Another Igbo Invasion - Itsekiri People Disowns Biafra

The Itsekiri people in Warri, Delta state have dissociated themselves from the call and agitation of some Igbo people in the south east for an independent state of Biafra.

According to Vanguard report, this was made known on Tuesday, October 27 by Itsekiri Leaders of Thought through a statement by its chairman Pa Johnson Ayomike and secretary, Edward Ekpoko.

The group is against the proposed Biafra republic which it was reported will include the whole of Delta state.

The group emphasized that the unity of Nigeria is its priority and that Biafra ceased to exist.

The statement read: “We recall with pains the day the defunct Biafran Army invaded Warri and Benin in the then Midwest Region on August 9, 1967. Never again will the Itsekiri tolerate such invasion. The Itsekiri nation is committed to the unity of Nigeria and will do all it can to promote and protect it as one indivisible country. As Major General Philip Effiong said on January 14 1970, the Republic of Biafra ceased to exist. We, the Itsekiri, wish it to be eternally so for the peace and development of our great nation.”

The upsurge in the agitation for an independent state of Biafra has increased in recent weeks. Members of the group have planned to confront President Muhammadu Buhari when he visits India.

Prophet Foresees the End Of Boko Haram

Prophet Ignis Iribhogbe, an apostle of Jesus Christ and a social commentator says he had a dream that the ongoing insurgency by Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram, will come to an end and will surprisingly usher in, an era of peace, tranquility and progress for all parts of the present contraption called ‘Nigeria’.

Read his post below:

I have a dream that a “Nigerian Goberchev” will arise and break the fraudulent/imposed geographical contraption into 5 (five) viable countries as follows:

1. Biafra (present Southeast zone) comprising the core Ndigbo

2. O’odua (present Southwest plus Yoruba speaking areas of Kwara and Kogi)

3. Niger Delta (present South South)

4. Federation of Central Nigeria (present Plateau, Benue, some parts of Nasarawa, and Southern Kaduna),

5. Islamic Caliphate of Nigeria (the remaining parts of present Northern Nigeria).

Thenceforth, there will be no more religious riots nor senseless bloodshed of the present type typified by Boko Haram. Rather, the present northern elders will coalesce into the ruling oligarchy of the caliphate and their topmost emirs will be called Ayatollahs.

Meanwhile, the present contraption will metamorphose into an economic subregion rivalling ECOWAS, and with healthy economic rivalry between the emerging component nations.

I have a dream.

Meanwhile, an Abuja-based prophet Victor Ajibishe has said that Boko Haram will strike the Federal Capital Territory again.

Prophet Victor Ajibishe predicted that there will be more Boko Haram bombings in the nation’s capital. He made the prophesy during a service on Sunday, October 4.

Amnesty: Ex Militants Begs Buhari

Former militants in Edo state under the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Phase 3, are begging President Muhammadu Buhari to address the issue of alleged marginalization in allocation of slots to beneficiaries of the programme in the state.

“We are begging our President to correct this imbalance so as to avoid unnecessary tension in the region. We believe in President Buhari to do the needful as a man that stands for justice and one who fights for the oppressed,” the former militants said.

Speaking to newsmen in Benin City, the ex-militants commended the president for appointing retired Brig-General Paul Boroh, to oversee the affairs of the programme in the South/South geo-political region, Vanguard reports.

According to the repentant militants, Boroh’s appointment would go a long way to douse the current tension arising from the implementation of non-payment of outstanding allowance to ex-militants.

They added that it would further address the anomalies in the amnesty programme.

The spokesman for the group, Abiodun Edah, said they made several attempts to get the former coordinator of the programme, Kinsley Kuku, to address the anomalies but they were not successful, attributing the failure bureaucratic bottlenecks.

He said: “The slot so far made available to the 3rd phase of the programme should be shared equitably devoid of any political coloration.

“The amnesty programme of the federal government is the blood testimony of the Niger Delta struggle and must not be targeted to particular people due to their influence. Our people in the 3rd phase Amnesty programme have not been recognized.”

About 500 former militants under the amnesty programme recently threatened to unleash mayhem in the Niger Delta region over the non-payment of their three-month allowances by the amnesty office.

Contrary to the claims of the ex-militants, the federal government has denied owing them. The amnesty office stated that all monthly payments to ex-militants under the programme were up to date. The head of media and communication in the presidential amnesty office, Owei Lakemfa said if there was any under payment or deduction, this should be brought to the notice of the programme for investigation.

The Court Is Setting A Dangerous Precedent – Wike Comments On Ruling

Nyesome Wike has characterized the yesterday’s ruling by the Election Petition Tribunal as a gang-up against him and Rivers state people.

It should be recalled that the Supreme Court on October 27 dismissed Governor Wike’s appeal. Previously, the petition challenging the election of Wike as Rivers governor was filed by Dakuku Peterside, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

In reaction to the development, Wike insisted that the judiciary was setting a dangerous precedent in the country, Vanguard reports.

The politician’s position was made known on Tuesday through his media adviser Opunabo Nko-Tariah. The statement contained that Wike’s side would take further legal steps to defend the choice made by Rivers people during the April 11 polls.

“What is going on right now can best be described as judicial gang-up against Governor Wike, nay, the people of Rivers state. It is an affront on democracy and a blight disregard for the will of the people as evinced in the April 11 general elections.
“The courts are setting pernicious precedents by hinging their verdicts on inane points. Rivers people overwhelmingly gave their mandate to Governor Wike but a microscopic few want to wrest that mandate from him through the back door.”

Peterside, on his part, blasted Wike over attacking the judiciary when he spoke in Abuja following the court decision announcement. He was quoted as saying:

“The judiciary is a sacred and respected institution. Therefore, any person or persons who openly criticise judges and their rulings obviously have a sinister motive.

See the comment by the counsel to Peterside (the article continues below):

“However, it is gratifying to note that people are beginning to fully appreciate the character and temperament of the people we engaged during the last general elections in Rivers State. They are obviously finding it difficult to live under due process and the rule of law because they are used to impunity and violence, the two evils that were taken to new heights under the last government.
“If service is really the reason for being in politics, then it is tragic that these politicians are conducting themselves in such a spiteful manner. Nobody is above the law and when people openly and brazenly challenge institutions of state like the judiciary, it sends the wrong signal.
“The APC in Rivers state and its candidates took their losses at the various election petitions tribunals with equanimity, knowing full well that a window of opportunity still exists. Even when we felt very dissatisfied with the verdicts, we still did not abuse the judiciary or judges who handled our cases because we know the consequences of such defamatory actions.
“Wike and Rivers PDP are still living in the past but they should be reminded that Nigeria of today is a survivor because she defeated impunity and all the lawlessness of the last administration.”

Commenting on the verdict, the Peoples Democratic Party urged its members to remain calm and law-abiding. The PDP official expressed confidence that Wike would be victorious at the end of the day.

USED vs LOVED - True Life Story

While a man was polishing his new car, his 4 yr old son picked up a stone and scratched lines on the side of the car.
In anger, the man took the child's hand and hit it many times not realizing he was using a wrench.
At the hospital, the child lost all his fingers due to multiple fractures.
When the child saw his father with painful eyes he asked, 'Dad when will my fingers grow back?'
The man was so hurt and speechless; he went back to his car and kicked it a lot of times. Devastated by his own actions. sitting in front of that car he looked at the scratches; the child had written 'I LOVE YOU DAD'.
The next day that man committed suicide. . .

Moral:
Anger and Love have no limits; choose the latter to have a beautiful, lovely life & remember this:
Things are to be used and people are to be loved.
The problem in today's world is that people are used while things are loved.
Let's try always to keep this thought in mind:

Things are to be used, People are to be loved.
Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character;
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

Man died during a 30-day jail sentence, ACLU Calls For Federal Probe

The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan has called for a federal civil rights investigation following the death behind bars of David Stojcevski, who was sentenced to 30 days for $772 in unpaid traffic fines. A recent investigation revealed that the sentence itself may not have been legal.

In a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday, the ACLU said it was “unconscionable” that the Macomb County Jail allowed Stojcevski to die — cameras capture him in his final hours, lying on the floor naked and writhing — and that he was jailed “because he was too poor to pay” his fines.

Last week, BuzzFeed News reported that Judge Joseph Boedeker, who sentenced Stojcevski to jail, may have violated the law by not first assessing his ability to pay the traffic fines. Unanimous U.S. Supreme Court rulings, as well as other Michigan court decisions, require judges to determine if a defendant can afford to pay fines before jailing him for failure to do so. But transcripts from the sentencing hearing show Boedeker asked no questions about Stojcevski’s finances. Stojcevski was told that he could either pay the $772 or spend 30 days in jail. “As soon as you pay,” Boedeker told him, “you can be released.”

In its letter to the Department of Justice, the ACLU of Michigan argues that a system that has two tracks, one for the wealthy and one for the poor, is illegal. “‘Pay or stay’ sentences are unconstitutional when the poor are incarcerated while the wealthy go free,” it wrote, citing the 1983 Supreme Court ruling in Bearden v. Georgia
.
Stojcevski’s death is already the subject of an inquiry by the FBI. A lawsuit filed by his family alleges that the medical staff’s failure to respond to Stojcevski’s drug addictions — he had a prescription for methadone and told jail officials that he was also using Xanax and Klonopin — cost him his life. After a few days in jail, Stojcevski began hallucinating. By the time he died, 16 days after his incarceration began, he had lost at least 45 pounds. An autopsy by the county medical examiner determined he died of “Acute Withdrawal.”

Macomb County’s attorney, John Schapka, declined to comment on the ACLU’s letter. “I don’t try cases in the press,” he said. The Macomb County sheriff, Anthony Wickersham, has previously said that reports based on the video of Stojcevski’s final hours are misleading and that jail officials did their jobs properly.

Judge Boedeker did not respond immediately to a request for comment, but last week he told BuzzFeed News he had acted legally. Stojcevski had missed two court dates, which Boedeker said meant he had “wilfully” chosen not to pay the ticket and could therefore be sent to jail. “I determined that he was in contempt because he had made no good-faith effort to pay,” Boedeker said. A recent ruling from a Michigan court, however, found that judges must assess a defendant’s ability to pay even if the defendant has missed a court hearing.

Jail time for unpaid fines has gained notoriety over the past year. The Department of Justice’s report following the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, found that many people there have been incarcerated for their debts. A recent investigation found that judges in Texas routinely flout the law by locking people up for their debts.

The ACLU of Michigan has already been fighting so-called “pay or stay” sentences there, recently winning a case in which a woman faced incarceration if she didn’t pay $455 stemming from a “no dog license” ticket. In its letter, the ACLU said that “(h)undreds if not thousands” of people in Michigan are locked up on such sentences each year. And Stojcevski was not the first to die in jail while incarcerated on a “pay or stay” sentence, the letter said, noting that Christopher Drewek committed suicide in the same jail as Stojcevski in 2010.

“Mr. Stojcevski’s death is a horrific reminder that even short incarceration on a ‘pay or stay’ sentence can have terrible consequences,” the letter says.

His first film and television involvement was off set, where he shoed horses. In the 1960s, his friend Robert Duvall encouraged Brimley to consider acting. He worked as a stagehand for The Doors and did carpentry work for celebrities like Oscar-nominated actress Sally Kellerman. At one point, Ford built cabinets for George Lucas and shortly thereafter Lucas cast him in “American Grafitti.” A few years later, Lucas asked Ford to read lines for the actors auditioning for “Star Wars.” Although Lucas reportedly only wanted to use first-time actors for the film, Ford’s performances during these auditions earned him the role of Hans Solo.

Reynolds considered becoming a police officer like his father, Burt Reynolds, Sr. but in part due to his father’s recommendation, stayed in college to pursue a career as a parole officer. Reynolds was now attending Palm Beach Junior College where he took a theater class. The teacher was producing a play and encouraged Reynolds to try out. Reynolds got the lead and won the Florida State Drama Award in 1956 for his performance. She also appeared in a Burger King commercial where she criticized McDonald’s so effectively, the corporation filed a lawsuit that got Gellar banned from the establishment for life. Gellar continued to work as a child actor, attend school, and even competed in figure skating and Tae Kwon Do all before she graduated from high school.

After he was released, Trejo worked as a youth drug counselor. A teenager Trejo was mentoring was working on a film and was worried he would have trouble staying away from available drugs on set. At the teen’s request, Trejo joined him on set for support. Not only did Trejo’s signature look earn him a role as an extra in prison scenes for the film, the screenwriter recognized Trejo. The screenwriter, Edward Bunker, had been in San Quentin with Trejo and remembered his boxing skills. Trejo was offered a job teaching the lead actor to fight. Another example of being in the right place at the right time, Pamela Anderson was spotted at a Canadian Football League game in the summer of 1989. She was noticed in the crowd wearing a tight Labatt’s beer t-shirt by a cameraman and ended up on the stadium screen. The crown cheered and she was invited down to the field as part of a public relations advertising campaign for Labatt’s. Her boyfriend at the time was also a photographer. He made a poster of her from the same day titled, “Blue Zone Girl” which sold well and earned her local celebrity status. Wayne lost his scholarship because he couldn’t play and had to drop out. After he left school, Wayne was hired to do odd jobs by director John Ford as a favor to his USC football coach, Howard Jones. Wayne was eventually offered bit parts and developed a friendship with Ford. This friendship certainly played a part in getting him cast as the lead in his first huge success, the classic western “Stagecoach.”
